Marineland completed the relocation of all its remaining captive whales and dolphins to five different destinations over the summer, following a Canadian federal government ban on keeping captive whales in 2019. The defunct Ontario theme park shipped its final 30 belugas and four dolphins to facilities in the United States and Spain in the largest-ever transfer of these marine animals.
Unfortunately, since the transfers, four belugas and one dolphin have passed away. The most recent death occurred on September 24 at the Oceanogràfic de València in Spain, raising concerns about the impact of the relocations on the animals’ health.
Echo, a blind Black Sea bottlenose dolphin believed to be 30 years old, was transported to Oceanogràfic on a lengthy journey from Niagara Falls, Ontario. Upon arrival, Echo had severe vision issues and other medical problems that required specialized care. Tragically, his health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his death.
Experts emphasize that transporting belugas is highly stressful for the animals, as the process is known to induce significant stress due to their nature. Psychological stress can directly affect their physical well-being, causing issues such as suppressed appetite.
Recent deaths of belugas and dolphins following their transfers have sparked investigations into the causes of these fatalities. Facilities like Oceanogràfic are conducting necropsies to determine the reasons behind the deaths, while monitoring the remaining animals closely.
Various facilities receiving the relocated belugas have reported on their status, with some showing positive signs of adjusting well. However, concerns remain about the health and adaptation of these animals to their new environments.
Experts highlight the challenges faced by belugas during transport and captivity, emphasizing the stress and psychological impact of such moves on these highly intelligent and social marine mammals. Despite efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the relocated animals, concerns persist about their future.
