Alberta Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the need for increased diplomatic efforts to sway U.S. lawmakers and citizens on the negative impacts of the ongoing trade war. Smith highlighted the importance of maintaining a friendly and helpful Canadian approach to influence the U.S. administration’s tariff policies.

She stressed the significance of pressure from various stakeholders in the U.S., such as governors, members of congress, and the public, to prompt a reconsideration of the current tariff strategies. Smith emphasized that Canada’s success in addressing the trade dispute lies in strategic thinking, agility, and leveraging the strong relationship with the American people to reverse the imposed tariffs.

While dismissing suggestions to use Canadian oil and gas as a bargaining tool in the trade conflict, Smith warned against the severe repercussions of implementing counter-tariffs on oil exports, particularly the potential consequences on the Canadian economy. She cautioned that such actions could lead to retaliatory tariffs on Canadian oil passing through the U.S., affecting fuel supplies and causing economic turmoil in Ontario and Quebec.

Smith also expressed concerns about losing the U.S. as a significant oil customer if energy resources are politicized, potentially leading to job losses and financial instability. Experts like Paul Chastko echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for stability and predictability in the energy sector to mitigate potential negative impacts.

Additionally, Smith called for a focus on eliminating internal trade barriers within Canada, urging for streamlined approval processes for pipelines and taxation changes to encourage domestic investments. She emphasized the importance of unity among Canadian provinces to promote free trade and discourage protectionism.

In response to the escalating trade tensions, Smith announced the formation of a tariffs cabinet committee to assess the province’s response to the new tariffs. She emphasized the importance of gathering feedback from businesses and establishing a business advisory committee to address the challenges posed by the trade dispute.

Political analysts, including Elizabeth Smythe, noted Smith’s efforts to frame her stance within a national context to address concerns about loyalty to Canada amid the trade conflict. Smythe highlighted the strategic messaging aimed at deflecting criticisms and emphasizing the potential negative impacts on the broader Canadian economy.
