“Wildlife Curiosity Disrupts Climate Research in Newfoundland”

In a tale of wildlife curiosity and research disruption, Lucas Brehaut, a wildfire researcher in Newfoundland, is facing unexpected challenges from local animals. Brehaut’s study focuses on forest regeneration post-wildfires in the Atlantic Canada region, where forest fires are becoming more prevalent despite the cooler and wetter climate. Following a forest fire near Grand Falls-Windsor in 2022, he embarked on a project to observe forest recovery in the face of climate change.

To conduct his research, Brehaut and his team transported 19 open-top chambers (OTCs) into the forest to monitor seedlings’ growth. These OTCs act as mini greenhouses, raising temperatures by up to three degrees to simulate the effects of a warming environment. Unfortunately, during a routine check-in in September 2023, Brehaut discovered that various animals, including caribou, moose, black bears, rabbits, coyotes, and owls, had interfered substantially with his research equipment.

Out of the 19 sites, 11 had suffered damage, with some animals even absconding with temperature sensors. Despite the setbacks, Brehaut maintains a positive outlook, acknowledging that the animals are simply exploring their habitat. Kaitlyn Gaynor, an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, suggests that animals are naturally curious about new objects in their environment, driven by the potential for food or perceived threats.

Bears, known for their inquisitive nature and omnivorous diets, are particularly drawn to novel items. Additionally, the human scent on equipment may attract animals, leading to further interference. Gaynor advises researchers to minimize their impact by swiftly entering and exiting research sites, reducing scent traces, and concealing equipment.

Animal interference in research is a global phenomenon, as seen in Gaynor’s experiences in Mozambique. Baboons, hyenas, and elephants have all caused disruptions, with elephants being particularly destructive due to their size and curiosity. Despite the challenges posed by wildlife, Brehaut has also encountered human-related mishaps, such as snowmobiles inadvertently damaging his research sites during snowy winters in Newfoundland.

The interplay between wildlife and scientific research highlights the importance of coexisting with nature, even when it disrupts human endeavors.
