The International Swimming League (ISL) is set to make a comeback after a five-year break with an All-Star Match scheduled for December 19 at the London Aquatics Centre. This event marks the league’s initial step towards its full relaunch.
The All-Star Match will showcase top swimmers from around the world vying for a significant prize pool, with specific details to be revealed later. Notable athletes like Caeleb Dressel from the US, Adam Peaty from Britain, and Katinka Hosszu from Hungary have participated in previous ISL events.
The announcement solidifies plans previously discussed by ISL Commissioner Ben Allen, who mentioned a revised commercial strategy aimed at reducing reliance on a single investor and increasing sponsorship and media partnerships for the league’s revival in 2026.
Established in 2019 to offer a professional competition outside the Olympic cycle, the ISL last held a season in 2021 before pausing operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and financial challenges faced by its primary supporter, Ukrainian businessman Konstantin Grigorishin.
In a bid to return to action, the ISL is considering a condensed format with a potential seven-match season across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The league may also shift to a one-day competition structure following previous two-day events.
Earlier this year, the ISL committed to paying overdue prize money to approximately 300 athletes from its 2021 season. The upcoming London event is expected to serve as a testing ground for this streamlined approach before a broader reintroduction.
ISL Commissioner Allen expressed enthusiasm for the All-Star Match, describing it as a pivotal moment for the sport with top athletes back in the spotlight. The London Aquatics Centre, constructed for the 2012 Olympics, will host this event, known for its history of hosting prestigious swimming competitions.
