Arjun Singh reminisces about his early days at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, recalling purchasing tickets for the premiere of “The Woman King” for $50 each. This year, he noticed balcony seats for similar premium screenings, which often include a Q-and-A session with the cast or director, being sold for up to $106.

Expressing his concerns, the Toronto non-profit worker mentioned that the escalating prices have led him to scale back on attending TIFF galas and opt for regular festival screenings instead.

While ticket prices at TIFF have incrementally increased each year, this year’s spike marked the first time in recent memory that films, apart from the opening and closing night galas, surpassed the $100 mark.

Attendees reported tickets for premieres of highly anticipated films like “Fjord,” “Prima Facie,” and “Love of Your Life” reaching prices as high as $106. Some even shared screenshots on Reddit showing tickets in the front rows of premieres selling for $128. Last year, similar tier screenings were priced at $98.

TIFF declined to provide comments on the ticket pricing when approached for multiple requests.

Expensive Costs: Concerns from a TIFF Fan

The rise in prices has left some devoted fans, who often watch over 30 films during the festival’s duration, contemplating the number of premieres they can afford to attend. Others are questioning how long it will be before they are priced out of an event once known as “the people’s festival” due to its affordability and accessibility.

Joel Chico, an actor who estimates his annual spending on up to 30 premium screening tickets to be around $2,000, expressed how the costs are accumulating, especially when buying tickets for friends. Despite the thrill of being present during a film’s debut alongside the cast, fans like Chico wish the prices were more affordable.

“I adore TIFF. It’s like my annual Christmas, but the expenses nowadays are somewhat exorbitant,” Chico stated.

Although TIFF typically discloses price ranges for all ticket types leading up to the festival, this year, they did not inform attendees of the maximum prices for seats in each category.

Regular screenings, which follow premieres and usually lack cast member appearances, were advertised starting at $30 for non-members, while premium screenings began at $46. Upon checking ticket availability, many premium seats were
