The Israeli government has issued a warning to Hamas, threatening to escalate “targeted strikes” on Gaza if the group does not take action to prevent the launching of kites towards Israel, a tactic used by Palestinians, including children.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on social media platform X, disclosed a recent discussion he had with Defence Minister Israel Katz regarding the ongoing threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites originating from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting involved high-ranking officials from the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
Israel has conveyed to Hamas that if the kite launches persist, the IDF will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible and will evacuate civilians from areas used as launching sites for kites, drones, and balloons. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel will not tolerate any threats to its communities and the security of its citizens.
However, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa in Khan Younis, flying kites along the shore serves as a brief escape from the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. He expressed that flying kites is a source of joy in an otherwise grim situation and highlighted that they do not pose any harm as they are crafted by children like him.
Prior to the outbreak of conflict on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel reported incidents where burning kites and balloons from Gaza caused fires and damage. Despite recent tensions, no weapons or hazardous materials have been attached to the kites found near Gaza.
In response to the recent Israeli strikes that resulted in casualties, Hamas condemned Netanyahu’s statements concerning children flying kites, accusing Israel of planning aggression and displacement. The group urged international condemnation of Israel’s actions and emphasized the need for a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.
Omar expressed fear over the possibility of being targeted while flying kites, highlighting the precarious situation faced by children in Gaza. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, voiced concerns about potential restrictions on children’s activities due to security issues raised by Israel.
As dusk descended, the children continued flying their kites near their tents, adapting to the changing circumstances in their environment.
