Sabrina and Junior Hunt were surprised during their boat trip to their cabin on Shabougamou Lake in Labrador West when they spotted a muskox, mistaking it for a pile of wood at first. The massive animal, typically found in the Arctic tundra, was seen walking along the shoreline as the couple approached in their boat.

The Hunts captured the unusual sighting on video, showing the muskox leisurely moving about as they got a closer look from about 30 feet away. The couple described the experience as magical, with the muskox’s fur swaying like a grass skirt.

While muskox sightings have occurred in Labrador before, they are rare in Labrador West. The Hunts suspect the muskox may have migrated from herds in northern Quebec. The Department of Forestry, Agriculture, and Lands expressed surprise at the sighting, acknowledging that it was beyond the animal’s usual range.

This unique encounter with the muskox in Labrador West has garnered attention and fascination.
