RCMP has issued a shelter-in-place directive for Fort Smith, N.W.T., shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday while searching for an armed male suspect. During the Fireweed Festival NT’s kickoff celebration at Dirty O’Fergies, a local pub in the 2,000-strong community, a “serious incident” involving a firearm was reported, as confirmed by festival organizers on social media. Although police have yet to verify reports of injuries, the RCMP continues to seek the armed suspect, described as donning a grey sweater. To gather digital evidence from witnesses, a community portal has been established by the police for public use.
Residents are urged to remain indoors and avoid opening their doors for anyone, as well as refraining from sharing images of responding officers on social platforms. While CBC’s Jared Monkman is broadcasting live from Fort Smith for The Weekender show, scheduled to commence at 6 a.m. MT, the Fort Smith Health Centre remains operational for emergencies only, implementing lockdown and mass casualty procedures. Residents are advised to call in advance for care at the health center.
The Fireweed Festival NT, now in its fifth year, is a celebration of music, culture, and community, offering live performances, interactive workshops, and community-driven activities in an inclusive and hospitable environment, according to event organizers.
