In the realm of cryptocurrencies, the question arises: who emerges victorious and who suffers defeat? Ben McKenzie, known for his role as Ryan Atwood in the TV series “The O.C.,” has transitioned his focus towards what he labels as “the largest Ponzi scheme in history” – cryptocurrency.

According to McKenzie, the cryptocurrency industry often sees a select few insiders reaping massive profits while the majority of regular investors face financial losses. His investigative documentary, “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” delves into this aspect. McKenzie’s interest in cryptocurrency sparked when a friend proposed investing in it, prompting him to explore the industry further, revealing what he describes as a facade of deception.

In 2022, McKenzie testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.” Despite some industry insiders criticizing his documentary for allegedly sensationalizing harmful narratives about cryptocurrency, McKenzie advocates for increased regulation to safeguard investors.

In a conversation with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe on “The Current,” McKenzie elaborated on the detrimental impact of cryptocurrency on men, emphasizing how it entices them with the allure of immense wealth while discouraging them from discussing their losses. He highlighted the documentary’s premise, emphasizing the importance of trust in the concept of money and expressing concerns about the privatization of currency through cryptocurrencies.

McKenzie pointed out the stark contrast between a few individuals amassing substantial wealth through crypto ventures and the widespread losses experienced by ordinary investors. He cited the example of Trump coin, a meme coin linked to the former U.S. president, where his family reportedly gained $1.4 billion while investors suffered losses exceeding $3 billion due to potential price manipulation and fraudulent practices prevalent in the cryptocurrency market.

Despite documented cases of financial setbacks, McKenzie noted that some investors who endured losses continue to believe in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. He attributed this persistence to psychological factors like the sunk-cost fallacy, wherein individuals are reluctant to admit defeat after investing significant resources. McKenzie stressed the need for societal support to prevent individuals, particularly men, from resorting to risky investments driven by the allure of quick riches promised by cryptocurrencies.

The documentary sheds light on the darker side of cryptocurrencies, emphasizing that while traditional financial systems have their flaws, the unregulated and volatile nature of cryptocurrencies poses even greater risks to investors. McKenzie urges a critical evaluation of the cryptocurrency narrative, emphasizing that it may not offer a genuine solution to the shortcomings of conventional financial systems.
