A Saskatoon police officer is being praised for their remarkable courage in the daring rescue of a teenage boy who was trapped in a storm drain by swiftly flowing rainwater last week. The incident, which posed a serious threat to life, was described as harrowing for both the teenager and the emergency responders present, according to Sean Thody, the deputy fire chief at the scene.

The episode unfolded when officers responded to a distress call at a dog park near the 3700 block of Kinnear Avenue around 8 p.m. CST on Aug. 14. Upon arrival, they discovered a young man stuck inside a storm drain, wedged against the grate by the force of rushing water. Thody emphasized the physical impossibility of resisting such high water flow.

The initial responding officer bravely entered the drain and kept the boy’s head above water until the fire department arrived to coordinate the rescue operation. Described as “organized chaos” by Thody, the rescue effort involved using spreaders to pry open parts of the grate and saws to cut through metal bars, creating enough space for the teenager to be freed.

The entire rescue operation, lasting nearly two hours, culminated in the safe extraction of the teenager, who was subsequently transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The police commended the unnamed officer for their exceptional bravery in assisting in a potentially life-threatening situation.

The City of Saskatoon’s water and waste operations department revealed that the incident occurred when four teenage boys accessed the stormwater system through an outfall. As rain began to fall, the storm sewers started to fill up, leading to the perilous situation. While three of the boys managed to escape, one was swept towards a grate-covered outfall and became trapped.

Prior to the arrival of emergency responders, the three remaining teenagers helped shield their friend from the water, enabling him to breathe. They were later relocated while the rescue operation was underway. Following the incident, city officials issued a warning urging residents to refrain from entering city infrastructure such as sewers, bridges, or electrical substations, emphasizing that only authorized personnel should access these areas due to their extreme danger.

The city advises residents to report any compromised or hazardous infrastructure to the authorities, emphasizing the potential risks associated with exploring such sites.
