Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has designated Alberta MP Dane Lloyd as the party’s referendum lead for Alberta, in anticipation of the upcoming separation-related vote in the fall. Poilievre revealed this decision on Sunday, sharing a letter addressed to Lloyd outlining his new role. Lloyd, who has represented the Parkland riding since 2017 and hails from Alberta, is highlighted on his website as a lifelong Albertan. Before entering politics, he served as a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces, an experience Poilievre believes will equip Lloyd with the necessary strength for his new responsibilities.

Poilievre, advocating for Alberta to remain within Canada, acknowledges the “legitimate concerns and grievances” Albertans have with the current situation. He stresses the importance of listening to Albertans rather than criticizing them, emphasizing that what benefits Alberta also benefits the entire country, including more pipelines, housing, lower taxes, enhanced security, stronger borders, and increased freedom.

CBC News has reached out for an interview with Lloyd. In a social media post, Lloyd expressed his honor in contributing to this significant discussion and his deep belief in a united Canada. Last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed Morgan Breitkreutz as the government’s senior adviser on Alberta, responsible for coordinating the federal response to the Alberta referendum and managing major initiatives like the proposed West Coast pipeline.

Separatist advocate Mitch Sylvestre, who spearheaded the petition for a separation referendum, comments that it is expected for the Conservatives to support the pro-unity stance, given the economic significance of Alberta within Canada. Sylvestre notes the Conservatives’ vested interest in retaining Alberta within the country, particularly due to the high number of seats they hold in the province. Evan Menzies, a former United Conservative Party member now with Crestview Strategies, commends Lloyd’s appointment, describing him as principled and dedicated to serving his community.

However, political analyst Lori Williams warns that Poilievre’s emphasis on criticisms of Ottawa could be counterproductive, potentially fueling separatist sentiments. One of the questions slated for the October referendum will inquire whether Albertans wish to remain part of Confederation or support the provincial government in initiating the legal process for a binding referendum on separation. The remaining nine questions pertain to immigration and constitutional issues, with Albertans set to voice their opinions on October 19.
