Upon receiving a distress call about a possible assault in a home, two RCMP officers swiftly responded to the remote island community of Opitsaht. Shortly after their arrival, a fatal incident unfolded, resulting in the shooting death of a Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation man named Julian Jones.

During a coroner’s inquest probing the circumstances leading to Jones’s demise, Cpl. Daniel Macintosh provided a detailed account of the events that transpired on the evening of Feb. 27, 2021. The inquest, aimed at unraveling the facts surrounding the tragedy, will culminate in recommendations to prevent similar occurrences, without assigning blame or criminality.

Despite Const. David Robichaud, who discharged the fatal shots, receiving a summons to testify, he chose not to participate after retiring and relocating out of the province. The Independent Investigations Office’s inquiry into the matter did not result in charges against the officers involved.

Jones, with a history of criminal convictions, including assaulting a Tofino RCMP officer, was under restrictions from contacting certain RCMP personnel, including Robichaud, as per parole officer David Paruk.

The fateful events at the Opitsaht residence unfolded rapidly, with Macintosh recounting a tense situation where Jones brandished what appeared to be weapons and defied commands from the officers. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, Robichaud ultimately resorted to using lethal force.

Macintosh vividly described the harrowing moment when he feared for his life as Jones advanced towards them. Subsequent actions taken by the officers led to Jones being fatally shot.

Following the tragic incident, Robichaud promptly transferred out of the Tofino RCMP, hastening his departure from the community. The inquest will resume its proceedings on Thursday as it seeks to shed light on the series of events that led to the untimely death of Julian Jones.
