ABC has taken legal action against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on grounds of the First Amendment, intensifying its conflict with the Trump administration. The network, along with its parent company Disney and eight local stations, filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the early renewal proceedings of broadcast licenses ordered by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump ally. The FCC’s directive for the early review of ABC’s licenses came after a controversial joke by ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, a vocal critic of Trump. ABC alleges that the administration’s actions pose an “existential threat” to its operations and infringe on its freedom of speech. The lawsuit aims to prevent any punitive actions against ABC and its affiliates related to the license renewal process. This legal battle is part of a broader conflict between ABC and the FCC, with the network also contesting efforts to subject “The View” to equal-time rules. The lawsuit highlights the broader implications of the administration’s actions on freedom of speech and press freedom. FCC Democrat Anna Gomez praised ABC and Disney for standing up against what she called the FCC’s campaign of censorship and control. In response, Carr defended the FCC’s actions, emphasizing broadcasters’ obligation to operate in the public interest. The FCC has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
