“Canada’s Senior Women’s Basketball Team Dominates in FIBA Opener”

Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team commenced the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico with a strong 72-57 triumph over Senegal. Kayla Alexander led the charge with 16 points and seven rebounds, supported by Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb contributing 13 points each.

Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, citing a solid start and emphasis on tough play and rebounding. Notably, Canada dominated the offensive boards with a 15-8 edge, with Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds adding to their possessions.

Swords’ early three-pointers set the tone for Canada’s control of the game, leading by as much as 17 points and maintaining their advantage despite a push from Senegal in the third quarter. Canada excelled in points in the paint, shooting 52.5%, and matched Senegal in points off turnovers while falling slightly behind in bench scoring.

Following their successful opener, Canada will enjoy a day off before their next match against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
