As the deadline for a 50% tariff from the U.S. approaches, some businesses in British Columbia are becoming increasingly concerned about the potential impact on their profits. Blaine Maryniuk, co-founder of West Coast Walls, expressed that the tariffs pose a significant threat to his business, which sees a substantial portion of its sales going to the United States each month.

With the impending tariff deadline nearing, Prime Minister Mark Carney described negotiations with the United States as delicate and intense. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette have engaged in discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer over the past few weeks to avoid the proposed Section 338 tariffs and potentially reduce existing tariffs on industrial products in exchange for Canadian concessions.

The U.S. claims that the tariffs are a response to Canadian practices that discriminate against its automotive, dairy, and alcohol sectors. For instance, they are seeking the reinstatement of U.S. liquor in provincially operated stores. The latest tariffs are specifically targeting wood products, which could have a significant impact on B.C., a region heavily reliant on this industry.

Businesses like Richmond Plywood are feeling the pressure as uncertainties loom. Richmond Plywood’s CFO, Bhavjeet Thandi, expressed concerns that the tariffs could halt sales to the U.S. overnight, resulting in a substantial hit to their revenue. Similarly, Alex Mitchell, CEO of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the vulnerability of businesses in the city that heavily rely on exports to the U.S.

The situation remains uncertain as Carney and President Donald Trump recently had a phone conversation, details of which were not disclosed. Businesses are on edge, awaiting the outcome of these negotiations. Maryniuk and others find the situation overwhelming as they navigate the challenges posed by the impending tariffs.
