Canadian soccer star Delaney Baie (DB) Pridham, known as the Northern Super League’s top scorer and Player of the Year, has prolonged her association with Rapid FC until the conclusion of the 2028 season. With 28 goals in the initial two NSL seasons and considerable involvement with the Canadian national women’s team, the 28-year-old is anticipated to participate in the upcoming quest for Canada to secure a spot in the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Originally hailing from Saratoga, California, Pridham, who attended Santa Clara University, has showcased her skills in various countries, including Iceland with IBV, and in Sweden with Kristianstads DFF and Linköpings FC. Nevertheless, her devotion to playing in Ottawa is paramount to her. Expressing her enthusiasm for the club’s strength and the promising vision of its new owners, Pridham emphasized her contentment with the city’s charm and the continuously expanding fan base.

Thomas Gilbert, the CEO of Rapid FC, expressed no surprise regarding Pridham’s decision to stay, stating that discussions had been ongoing since the previous year. Gilbert highlighted Pridham’s unwavering dedication and confidence in her commitment, leading to a mutually beneficial contract negotiation.

Details of the contract extension were not disclosed. Pridham’s decision to remain in Ottawa aligns with a trend of Canadian talents joining the club, exemplified by the appointment of former national team player Carmelina Moscato as the upcoming season’s head coach. This influx of top-tier talent into the NSL underscores the league’s ambition to become a global powerhouse in women’s soccer.

While player movement between leagues is a common occurrence, both Gilbert and NSL president Christina Litz emphasized their proactive measures to create an environment that incentivizes players to stay. Pridham’s consultation with Moscato played a pivotal role in her decision to extend her stay at Ottawa FC, underscoring the supportive and encouraging atmosphere within the club.

The NSL’s appeal lies in providing players with valuable playing time and experiences crucial for national team aspirations. Recent high-profile acquisitions in the league, such as Sabrina D’Angelo and Shelina Zadorsky at AFC Toronto, and Marie-Yasmine (Mimi) Alidou at Montreal Roses, further enhance the league’s international allure and competitive landscape.

Litz reiterated the league’s objective to rank among the top five leagues globally, with a focus on attracting and retaining top-tier talent. The significance of playing in their home country and staying close to family and friends serves as a compelling factor for Canadian players opting to compete in the NSL, contributing to the league’s growth and success.

As the NSL continues its upward trajectory, ongoing signings and contract extensions serve as tangible indicators of the league’s progress and increasing appeal to elite players worldwide.
