150 corgis recently gathered for an international race in Lithuania to celebrate these small herding dogs from Wales. The event, known as the fifth Corgi Race Vilnius, featured various activities like a costume parade, a contest to find the “smartest nose,” and a competition for the loudest bark.
Dogs and their owners from nine countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, Czech Republic, the United States, and Britain, where the breed is famously associated with Queen Elizabeth II, participated in the event. This year marked the largest edition of the race, with a total of 150 corgis from different nations competing at Vingis Park in the Lithuanian capital.
The organizer, Edvinas Miskas, expressed the growth of the event, noting that from its initial year with 40 corgis from one city, it had now expanded to 150 dogs from multiple countries. The winner of the final race, which involved a 25-meter sprint between corgis, was an American dog named GG, short for Gustave the Girl Dog. The second-place finisher was Mr. Corgington from the U.S., while Lithuania’s Moka, a former two-time champion, secured the third spot.
Beside the racing competition, other events included a costume parade with corgis dressed in various outfits such as a dinosaur suit, a dress, and sports gear. Amigo won the costume contest with a knight-inspired look. Additionally, corgis showcased their intelligence in the “smartest nose” challenge, where Latvian dogs Tora and Rusty shared the victory by finding hidden treats.
A unique feature of the event was the loudest bark competition, won by Mr. Corgington. Despite not participating in the main race due to age, 12-year-old Duke, a Pembroke Welsh corgi from England, aimed for victory in the barking contest after a lifetime of training, showcasing the diverse talents of the dogs and their owners.
Overall, the event was a successful gathering of corgi enthusiasts from around the world, with both newcomers and veteran participants adding to the festive atmosphere. The international race not only celebrated the agility and speed of corgis but also highlighted their unique skills and individual personalities.
