In a dominant performance, Boston pitcher Payton Tolle held the Blue Jays to just two hits over eight innings, while Caleb Durbin’s grand slam in the eighth inning secured a 7-0 victory for the Red Sox in Toronto on Thursday. Durbin’s home run, his 12th of the season, came off Blue Jays reliever Chase Lee and helped Boston salvage one win in the four-game series.

Despite the loss, the Blue Jays have been on a strong run, winning 11 of their last 17 games as they push closer to securing the American League’s final wild-card spot. The series against the Red Sox was a positive start as Toronto embarks on a 10-game stretch facing tough opponents like the New York Yankees and AL-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Red Sox manager John Schneider acknowledged the challenge of facing quality pitching and commended his team’s performance in the series. The victory marked the seventh consecutive win in games started by Tolle, who displayed excellent control on the mound, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Max Scherzer reached a significant milestone by pitching 3,000 career innings, becoming the 139th pitcher in MLB history to achieve this feat. Despite the accomplishment, Scherzer, a veteran for the Blue Jays, expressed disappointment over the loss, emphasizing his focus on winning games each time he takes the mound. Beset by various injuries earlier in the season, Scherzer’s resilience and dedication to the team were evident as he continued to pitch through discomfort to support the injury-plagued rotation.

The Red Sox took an early lead in the game and added more runs late to secure the shutout victory. In a key moment, Scherzer thwarted a bases-loaded threat in the fourth inning with a crucial out. Despite a recent losing streak, the Red Sox have maintained a strong record since the trade deadline, demonstrating their competitiveness in the league.

Looking ahead, Toronto’s Shane Bieber will start the upcoming series against the New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole, as the Blue Jays aim to continue their push for a wild-card spot.
