The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback at the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada was called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, preventing officials from conducting a final safety inspection. Organizers announced plans to accommodate the missed sessions on the following day’s schedule.
This marks the first year that Markham has hosted the event, which was relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, its home since its inception in 1986. IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment, citing the challenges faced by the promoters in completing the track build on time despite substantial support from the IndyCar team.
Longtime race attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, expressed mixed feelings about the delay in practice and qualifying. Coburn emphasized the importance of safety in ensuring a smooth event without any accidents tarnishing the experience for fans.
The move of the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham last September. The newly constructed temporary circuit spans between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Incomplete aspects such as a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing modifications for marshals to wave flags were among the outstanding features.
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed significant capital spending for the race, surpassing $12 million, including infrastructure enhancements like road repaving. The support for the event also saw investments from the Ontario and federal governments earlier in the year.
Despite the challenges, activities off the track proceeded as planned, including autograph sessions with drivers. Saturday’s schedule is expected to be busier, with IndyCar set to conduct practice sessions and qualifying rounds during the day, culminating in the traditional road course knockout format in the early evening.
In addition to IndyCar, the weekend will feature races from the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series on the road course. The event has drawn thousands of fans to the Markham track, with Friday’s temperatures peaking at 26°C or 31°C with humidity.
Stobo expressed some logistical challenges at the Markham location compared to the previous venue, highlighting the limited shade and seating options. Looking ahead, the anticipation remains high for a spectacular showcase once the track is ready for the main event on Sunday.
