“From Fear to Freedom: A Mother’s Journey with Her Son’s Allergy”

Morgan Klachefsky, a resident of Winnipeg, recounts a harrowing experience when her son Simon, at just 18 months old, suffered a severe allergic reaction to cashews. This incident led to the discovery of Simon’s life-threatening allergy to cashews and pistachios.Learn more about CBC’s First Person stories here.

Following Simon’s diagnosis, Morgan embarked on a mission to protect her son from potential allergen exposure. Initially overwhelmed by fear and the weight of responsibility, she gradually learned to trust others with Simon’s care and let go of control.

As Simon matured, Morgan’s anxiety lessened, prompting her to focus on her own mental well-being. She gradually relinquished control, allowing Simon to navigate social events independently while educating him on managing his allergies.

Over time, Simon’s confidence inspired Morgan to take a leap of faith, allowing him to attend sleepaway camp despite her initial reluctance. Through education and trust-building, Simon now manages his allergies independently, signaling a significant milestone in both their lives.
