Additional arrests have been carried out in Thetford following an incident where a group tried to break into residences associated with asylum seekers and assaulted police officers.
Norfolk Police confirmed the arrest of two men on Thursday after two consecutive nights of disturbances in the town. One individual was apprehended under suspicion of inciting racial animosity related to events on Wednesday, while the other was detained for being intoxicated, disorderly, and failing to provide identification to law enforcement upon request.
Following the previous disorder, police authority was elevated on Thursday evening due to the aggressive actions faced by officers the day before, including being attacked with a rock, bitten, and spat at.
After responding to an incident on Clover Way, two officers were taken to the hospital that evening. The police described the situation as rapidly escalating and volatile as a crowd advanced towards a residential property.
Law enforcement reported that on Tuesday night, windows were smashed, fences were destroyed, and attempts were made to forcibly enter a residential premise.
The demonstrators’ efforts to gain access to the homes stemmed from concerns that the properties were accommodating asylum seekers.
Social media footage circulated depicting police assisting multiple asylum seekers away from residences in the vicinity.
Critics and online users criticized the police intervention, with accounts suggesting that a woman in a mobility scooter was pepper-sprayed on Wednesday. The police defended their actions as appropriate and proportional, including the use of Pava spray.
They clarified that Pava, a handheld incapacitating substance similar to pepper spray, was utilized in response to an individual’s conduct within the crowd.
A police spokesperson stated, “We acknowledge the concerns raised regarding a woman using a mobility scooter who was affected during the incident.
“It was not the intention to impact any bystanders; however, if individuals remain in an area of active disturbance and disregard police instructions to move away, there is a possibility they may be affected by tactics deployed to ensure public safety.”
An anonymous resident of Clover Way recounted that around 9:30 pm on Wednesday, “several young boys… arrived on bikes and threw eggs at the house.” The seated demonstration initially commenced peacefully until more officers arrived and formed a barrier, according to the resident.
Subsequently, “it started to become somewhat disorderly,” and “individuals approached the police,” the resident mentioned.
She noted that no one tried to enter the property, adding that police started using pepper spray, including on “a lady in a wheelchair.”
