A recent study revealed that approximately a quarter of families with children under the age of five are facing food insecurity. Shockingly, the rate of food poverty among single-parent households with young children rises to fifty percent. Additionally, nearly forty percent of households with a child under five and an adult with a disability are experiencing food poverty.

The research highlighted that children under five have been overlooked in discussions on poverty, with a focus primarily on older children. Surprisingly, a lower percentage of households with children aged five to 17 face food poverty compared to those with younger children.

Dr. Kerris Cooper, associate director of early years and inequalities at the Education Policy Institute (EPI), expressed concern over the alarmingly high levels of poverty among young children. She emphasized that younger children are at a higher risk of food poverty, especially when considering additional risk factors.

The study defined families in food poverty as those struggling with issues like skipping meals, inadequate food intake, or weight loss due to financial constraints. Dr. Cooper noted the progress made in addressing food poverty for school-age children but highlighted the inconsistency in support across different age groups.

Dr. Cooper advocated for providing free meals to all disadvantaged pre-school children, regardless of the type of nursery setting they attend. The EPI also recommended expanding the Healthy Start Scheme to include children aged four and non-British children without access to public funds.

Moreover, the EPI urged policymakers to review safety net policies to ensure all families have sufficient income to afford essentials, including nutritious food for young children. Various experts echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the critical need to address child poverty and ensure all children have access to proper nutrition for healthy development and academic success.
