A young boy, aged nine, who had been waiting for a heart transplant for eight years, has finally received the life-saving surgery. Dáithí Mac Gabhann was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) at birth in 2016, a rare condition that affects the development of the left side of the heart. His first major surgery took place when he was just four days old.
After a long wait for a suitable donor, Dáithí’s perseverance and his family’s advocacy efforts led to changes in Northern Ireland’s organ donation laws. The family expressed immense gratitude upon announcing that Dáithí had undergone a successful heart transplant at the NHS Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
Nurses applauded Dáithí as he left the hospital ward, accompanied by the iconic tune “Eye of the Tiger.” His family shared the emotional moment on social media, emphasizing the significance of the “gift of life” that he had received.
Following the surgery, Dáithí is expected to stay in Newcastle for three weeks before returning to Northern Ireland. His journey has been marked by various medical challenges, including a bypass procedure at just four days old and complications with his heart valves due to backward blood flow.
His family and community launched the Donate4Dáithí campaign to raise awareness about organ donation, resulting in significant support through a GoFundMe campaign. The advocacy efforts also led to a change in Northern Ireland’s organ donation process, known as Dáithí’s Law, effective from June 1, 2023, making the region the final part of the United Kingdom to adopt an opt-out system for organ donation.
