A popular figure on social media in Mexico met a tragic end as he was fatally shot during a live broadcast on a public street. Cesar Gastelum, known for his comedic content on TikTok with a sizable following, was targeted and killed while streaming outside a fast-food establishment in Culiacan. Following the abduction of Sinaloa Cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in 2024, a power struggle ensued within the cartel, resulting in increased bloodshed. The situation worsened as factions led by different figures engaged in warfare, leading to a surge in violence. The tragic killing of Cesar Gastelum draws parallels to the 2025 murder of beauty influencer Valeria Marquez in Jalisco. Marquez, also a TikTok user, was shot during a live stream at her workplace, a salon, highlighting the dangers faced by influencers in Mexico. Recent arrests in Jalisco, including that of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, alleged leader of a criminal group associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, shed light on the organized crime networks behind such violent incidents. Authorities have tied Alvarez Ayala to multiple criminal activities, including the murder of Valeria Marquez and Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo in 2025.
