Lifeguards cleared a British beach following the sighting of a large shark patrolling the waters. The RNLI lifeguards utilized loudspeakers to instruct individuals to exit the water at St Ouen’s Bay, Jersey, due to multiple sightings of the shark on Saturday morning. The shark was described as dark grey and approximately 10 to 12 feet long.
A local lifeguard mentioned that it was a historic event for Jersey to close the beach due to a shark sighting, a rare occurrence in the British Isles. Lifeguard Tom Rolls expressed his initial disbelief upon receiving a report from a colleague about the shark sighting further down the coast. Red flags were raised, and a PA system was used to prompt people to leave the water before the beach was reopened about an hour later, with no reported injuries.
In a separate incident in June, a 4.3-meter-long smalltooth sand tiger shark washed up on Grève d’Azette beach in Jersey. Despite efforts by responders from various organizations to revive it, the shark passed away shortly after being discovered.
Sand tiger sharks are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters like the Mediterranean. In August 2021, a portion of the water off Boscombe and Bournemouth beaches in Dorset was briefly cleared by RNLI lifeguards after reports of a large marine animal, later identified as a harmless basking shark. Similarly, in July 2012, surfers and swimmers were evacuated from Croyde Bay in Devon after a large fin was spotted in the water, believed to be from a basking shark.
