A strong earthquake jolted the southern part of the Philippines on Wednesday. The quake, measuring 6.3 magnitude, hit 32km southwest of Sarangani with a depth of 10km. Despite the intense shaking, there is no tsunami threat reported.
No casualties or damages have been immediately reported. Harly Sauro, an island rescuer, mentioned that people were in a state of panic, running and shouting during the quake while gathered to receive a government subsidy. Fortunately, everyone remained safe.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated a low likelihood of casualties but warned of potential high levels of damage due to vulnerable properties in the region. The earthquake not only affected the Philippines but also impacted Indonesia.
This incident follows a previous earthquake two months ago that displaced over 10,000 families in Mindanao island, resulting in at least 35 deaths and over 100 injuries. Tsunami alerts were issued in several countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia, but were later cancelled or downgraded after the quake.
