A man who sought medical advice for arm pain, initially diagnosed as a muscle strain, tragically passed away at his residence several weeks later. Iain Cook, aged 29, seemed healthy but had visited a doctor due to discomfort in his left arm. Despite being active in football, managing a store, and becoming a father to Zac, Iain’s sudden death shocked his wife Sarah.

Post-mortem results revealed that Iain succumbed to coronary heart disease and left ventricular hypertrophy on October 31, 2016. His undiagnosed heart condition went unnoticed despite his GP visit. In an effort to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents, Iain’s long-time friend Mike Scott shared his story.

Mike expressed regret for not pushing Iain to seek further medical attention after the initial diagnosis of a muscle strain. Despite Iain’s active lifestyle and recent life milestones, his underlying heart condition went undetected. The charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) highlighted the prevalence of undiagnosed heart conditions among young individuals in the UK, with approximately 12 deaths occurring weekly.

Remembering Iain as a compassionate and lively individual, Mike initiated The Batman Challenge in his memory. The fundraising campaign, named after one of Iain’s nicknames, aims to collect £20,000 for CRY to sponsor cardiac screenings for young people. The fundraising activities include an Anfield abseil, a charity cycle from Anfield to Dunfermline, and various other events.

Mike emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention in memory of his friend, hoping to spare other families the grief they experienced. Donations to the fundraiser can be made through the provided link.
