Glasgow 2026 has been praised as a model for upcoming Commonwealth Games. The event showcased a new format utilizing existing facilities, proving to be a major success by selling over 430,000 tickets.

Phil Batty, the CEO of Glasgow 2026, emphasized the Games’ potential to inspire more nations to host in the future. He highlighted that Glasgow not only saved but also redefined the Commonwealth Games.

With a projected cost of £162.6m, Glasgow 2026 was significantly more cost-effective compared to previous editions. Netball emerged as the most popular sport, attracting over 100,000 spectators. English powerlifter Mark Swan clinched the first gold medal among the 215 medal events.

The 23rd edition of the Games, held in a more compact manner, featured 215 medal events and a record 47 para-sports events. Australia led the medal tally with 171, followed by England with 110 medals. The host nation secured 39 medals, ranking fifth behind Canada and India.

Notable achievements included Welsh cyclist Emma Finucane winning four track gold medals and Louise Hoskins becoming the oldest gold medallist at 76 years. South African swimmer Chad le Clos set a record as the most decorated athlete in the event’s history with 21 medals.

Celebrities such as Prince William and Princess Kate, along with their children, witnessed the action. Mile world record holder Josh Kerr impressed with a thrilling victory in the mile event, last seen at the Games in 1966. Kerr later spent 45 minutes interacting with fans, taking selfies, and signing autographs.
