An explosion occurred at a restaurant in the central area of Moscow, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, as reported by Russian state media. The incident also left 21 people injured, with some in critical condition, while investigative teams, forensic specialists, and emergency responders are actively engaged at the site. The explosion, caused by a homemade explosive device, took place at the Italian restaurant situated in Kudrinskaya Square.
The casualties of the blast include the perpetrator, a security personnel, and a patron at the popular Balzi Rossi restaurant. The National Anti-Terrorist Committee disclosed that a woman carrying explosives tried to enter the premises but was intercepted. Subsequently, the explosive device detonated, leading to the fatalities of the woman, the guard, and a visitor.
The explosion happened around 8pm local time, with ongoing investigations, as stated by the Moscow Investigative Committee to the RIA news agency, which released footage showing heavily armed law enforcement officers at the location. Surrounding roads have been sealed off to the public.
Witnesses recounted seeing individuals exiting the scene covered in blood following the detonation. Authorities have refrained from disclosing the identities of the victims or providing information on potential suspects.
Police mentioned that the injured individuals sustained wounds of varying severity during the attack. The restaurant’s website indicated closure for a private event on its outdoor terrace that Saturday.
Balzi Rossi is positioned at the foot of the Kudrinskaya Square Building, an iconic Stalinist skyscraper from the 1950s in Moscow.
Chef Carmine Alfieri of Balzi Rossi reassured the public, mentioning, “We’re all safe, and our restaurant and kitchen are undamaged; there was just a minor incident at the entrance,” on Instagram without further elaboration.
