A massive wildfire has ravaged Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, destroying wildlife habitats that may need up to 25 years to recover. The blaze started on Wednesday, engulfing an area equivalent to about 140 football pitches near the Sizewell B nuclear power plant. The fire also affected parts of the RSPB’s Minsmere nature reserve, home to rare birds and reptiles.

The Suffolk area manager for the RSPB, Adam Rowlands, stated that the habitat will take years to return to its original state after the fire outbreak. Over 200 caravans were evacuated from the area, and multiple fire crews are still working to contain the flames.

An EDF spokesperson confirmed that the fire has not impacted operations at the Sizewell B power station. The National Trust, responsible for Dunwich Heath since 1968, described the impact on the site as “catastrophic.”

Local officials highlighted the complexity of managing the fire due to dry conditions and challenging terrain. Firefighters are making progress in controlling the blaze, with additional support from crews outside the region.

The devastating fire has affected various wildlife species, and efforts are underway to support habitat recovery. The National Trust has emphasized the need for urgent action to address climate extremes to prevent future incidents like the wildfires in the UK. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide health advice to residents in affected areas.

The ongoing response to the wildfire includes the deployment of additional resources and the implementation of safety measures to protect the community and environment. The situation remains dynamic, with efforts focused on containment and recovery.
