Detectives have conducted DNA tests on over 600 men in their efforts to solve a gruesome murder case that occurred 40 years ago, leading to the wrongful imprisonment of an innocent man for 38 years.
Peter Sullivan, aged 30 at the time, was wrongly accused of murdering florist Diane Sindall, 21, in a brutal attack on August 2, 1986, leading to him being labeled as the “Beast of Birkenhead” and “Wolfman.” His conviction was overturned last year after he claimed to have made a false confession due to mistreatment by Merseyside officers.
A renewed investigation into the Wirral murder in 2023 identified a male DNA match from samples found at the crime scene, prompting ongoing efforts, including collaboration with the National Crime Agency, to identify the individual linked to the DNA profile.
A reward of up to £20,000 from Crimestoppers remains available for information exclusively provided to the charity that leads to the arrest and conviction of Diane’s killer.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, heading the inquiry, expressed determination to bring justice for Diane, emphasizing the ongoing review of the case, witness interviews, DNA testing, and examination of new leads from the public.
Wilson highlighted the significance of DNA technology in the investigation, stating that 575 individuals have been excluded based on DNA profiles, with 32 still under scrutiny. She urged anyone withholding information out of fear or misplaced loyalty to come forward to assist in the investigation.
Diane, who was working part-time at a pub to save for her upcoming wedding, tragically lost her life after being assaulted while walking home. Her body was discovered in an alleyway, having suffered severe injuries resulting in a fatal cerebral hemorrhage.
Sullivan’s arrest in 1986 came following discrepancies in his statements and alleged violent behavior near the crime scene. During his trial, dental evidence wrongly linked him to the crime through bite marks, earning him the “Wolfman” moniker.
Sullivan, upon his release, expressed sympathy for Diane’s family and offered his support in their pursuit of justice. He emphasized his willingness to stand by them during court proceedings against the true perpetrator.
The case serves as a reminder of the evolving role of DNA evidence in criminal investigations, with advancements in technology playing a crucial role in rectifying miscarriages of justice.
