A couple from California has been sentenced to over ten years in prison for the brutal killing of a 1-year-old child. Samantha Garver, 26, and her partner Sergio Mena, 34, admitted to charges of second-degree murder and causing severe bodily harm to Garver’s son, Henry Wheatley-Brown.
The tragic incident occurred while little Henry was in Mena’s care at their residence in Sugarloaf, near Big Bear City, California, on September 30, 2023. Henry suffered fatal burns when Mena left him in scalding hot water unattended, allegedly to procure methamphetamine.
An investigation revealed that Henry had been subjected to continuous abuse, with second- and third-degree burns, bruising, and healing fractures on his body. Child services determined that the cause of his death was due to neglect or abuse.
Upon Mena’s return home, he found Henry in excruciating pain from severe burns but did not provide any aid. Both defendants failed to seek medical help for Henry’s life-threatening injuries and attempted to treat his burns with over-the-counter ointment.
Authorities were only informed the next day when the couple noticed Henry’s shallow breathing. Paramedics arrived to find Henry unresponsive, cold, and severely dehydrated. The district attorney’s office expressed that while nothing can undo the suffering Henry endured, the sentences ensure justice and prevent further harm to children.
Sergio Mena received a 21-year sentence, while Samantha Garver was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Records indicated years of abuse towards Henry and his siblings, prompting the involvement of the San Bernardino County Department of Children and Family Services with Garver.
Reports indicated that Garver had expressed disturbing thoughts about her children, including contemplating silencing a crying child with a pillow and asking on social media about the appropriateness of duct-taping a child’s mouth. Family members seemed to downplay the severity of the abuse, with the boy’s grandmother suggesting that abuse is common and manageable.
In a perplexing case, investigators had conflicting opinions on the safety of the children in the household, highlighting the complexities of identifying and preventing child abuse.
