Love was in the air for Rebecca Boren as she witnessed a heart-shaped lightning bolt striking over Cannon Beach, Oregon. The 33-year-old from Seattle, Washington, captured the electrifying moment on camera during a stormy afternoon at the beach, a rare sight for her.

This unique lightning bolt, among the 8,357 strikes that hit Oregon on July 22, has ignited wildfires in the region. Lightning, while captivating, can also be perilous. In the US, approximately 25 million lightning flashes occur, demonstrating the immense power and danger it poses.

The formation of lightning is a result of the interaction between negatively charged particles in storm clouds and the positive charge on the ground. When these charges meet, an electric current is generated, heating the surrounding air to extreme temperatures and creating thunderous shockwaves.

Despite its beauty, lightning remains a serious threat. Between 2006 and 2025, there were 517 lightning-related deaths in the US, with men being significantly more at risk than women. In the UK, one to two lightning-related fatalities are reported annually by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

While nature’s displays can be awe-inspiring, they also serve as a reminder of the forces at play and the importance of safety in the face of such natural phenomena.
