Shamed funeral director Robert Bush has entered his second day in court, facing heart-wrenching testimonies from victims who described their loved ones being mistreated in distressing ways. After a night in custody, Bush, aged 48, is awaiting his sentencing on Friday following emotional victim impact statements. Upon his appearance in court today, Bush seemed visibly affected, with one victim questioning how his parents must be feeling, causing him to look down.
The proceedings at Hull Crown Court have exposed the anguish endured by Bush’s victims, many of whom suffer from PTSD, recurring nightmares, and a loss of trust in others. One victim poignantly asked, “If you can’t trust an undertaker, who can you trust?”
Bush faces sentencing for over 65 offenses spanning 12 years, impacting more than 300 victims and bereaved families. The investigation was triggered by two funeral directors who were asked to handle a body for Bush while he was away, leading to the discovery of a distressing scene with 31 bodies left uncremated, including a stillborn infant present for nearly two years. Additionally, over 100 sets of ashes were found, some even labeled with names and letters.
Further investigations unveiled a pattern of fraudulent activities by Bush, including giving grieving families incorrect ashes and mishandling funds related to funeral plans. He also diverted charitable donations meant for organizations like the Salvation Army and Macmillan Cancer Support.
As Bush faced the families at court, emotions ran high, with some individuals in tears and others expressing anger towards the disgraced director. The victims shared heartbreaking accounts of their loved ones being mistreated, causing immense emotional distress.
One victim, Angela Scottow, recounted the shock of discovering her father’s body at the facility, expressing deep sorrow and a sense of betrayal by the man they had trusted with their loved one’s dignity. Similarly, Tina Thames shared her disappointment and feelings of deception by Bush, lamenting the loss of trust and the emotional turmoil caused by his actions.
The court is expected to hear around 200 victim impact statements during the sentencing, which spans five days at Hull Crown Court. Bush, formerly based in Kirk Ella, East Yorkshire, and now residing in Otley, West Yorkshire, remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue.
