A significant number of vacationers have been instructed to evacuate the vicinity near the French Atlantic Coast due to raging wildfires. More than 4,000 individuals have been directed to vacate campsites, tourist accommodations, holiday resorts, and recreational areas around Lacanau, approximately 40 miles from Bordeaux. This evacuation order comes as firefighters intensively work to contain the fires before a new 41C heatwave hits the country’s southwest.
French President Emmanuel Macron has described the wildfires as the most challenging issue France has faced since World War Two, with over 260,000 people already displaced from their homes in the southwest region. The mayor of Bordeaux, Thomas Cazenave, is making preparations for potential further evacuations and ensuring arrangements are in place to accommodate a large number of people if needed.
In Spain, 63,000 residents have been forced to evacuate from their homes near Madrid. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has labeled this situation as a severe consequence of the climate crisis. Firefighters and military engineers are actively working to create tactical firebreaks in Gironde to prevent the wildfire from spreading. Despite some progress, officials caution that smoldering vegetation and reduced humidity levels could trigger new outbreaks.
A total of 64 miles of barriers have been established, and unfortunately, 93 firefighters have sustained injuries during the operation in Gironde. While some residents are returning home following a separate wildfire in the Landes region, which displaced over 30,000 individuals and tourists, the situation remains critical. Authorities have mandated the evacuation of 4,000 people from tourist spots on the Atlantic coast due to worsening weather conditions heightening the risk of wildfires.
Residents have been urged to gather personal belongings, adhere to emergency directives, and avoid the area until official permission for return is granted. Additionally, Spain’s weather agency has announced another heatwave expected to last until the end of the week, with temperatures anticipated to soar up to 42C in the northeast and 39C in the central regions.
