A tragic incident unfolded at Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, where a father and daughter lost their lives while being swept away on Sunday night. The victims, a man in his 60s and his daughter in her 30s from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, were rescued from the sea but unfortunately could not be revived despite efforts made by emergency services.
Police disclosed that the woman was carrying an orange or peach-colored handbag with sentimental items inside when she entered the water. Authorities are urging anyone who finds the leather-style bag to return it as it holds significant value to the woman’s loved ones.
The rescue operation involved a coastguard helicopter, search and rescue teams from Newquay, Padstow, and St Agnes, as well as lifeboats from Newquay RNLI. Sadly, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, and their families have been informed.
Mayor Drew Creek of Newquay expressed the town’s somber atmosphere following the tragic event, emphasizing the community’s support for the affected families. The incident occurred at a renowned surfing location, Fistral Beach, known for its large winter waves and hosting various surf competitions.
This unfortunate event occurred shortly after another drowning incident near West Wittering beach, West Sussex, bringing the total number of drownings in open water to 40 since late May. Amid rising concerns, there are calls for enhanced water safety education and better rescue equipment at hazardous water bodies.
In response to the string of deaths, The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign advocates for compulsory water safety lessons, increased awareness, and the implementation of Sam’s Law to ensure permanent safety measures. The campaign, named after a teenager who drowned in 2021, has garnered support from bereaved families and lawmakers.
Additionally, a recent tragedy off the Essex coast resulted in the drowning of a mother and her teenage daughter, attributed to a strong tide. The incident left the family devastated, with one child airlifted to a London hospital in critical condition.
