Raging wildfires in the southwest regions of France and eastern parts of Spain have resulted in the evacuation of over 330,000 individuals. The fires are encroaching closer to the French city of Bordeaux and its airport.
Approximately 220,000 residents have been relocated from their homes in France’s Gironde department, where Bordeaux is situated. The hotel zone of the city’s airport has also been cleared as a precautionary measure.
The firefighting efforts have been challenged by shifting winds and dry conditions, hampering attempts to contain the uncontrolled blaze that began last week. The fire has generated a rare “pyrocumulonimbus” phenomenon, characterized by a massive fire-induced thunderstorm with its own winds and lightning.
In Spain, wildfires have been raging uncontrollably near Madrid, leading to evacuations in the Valencia region. About 15,000 people were forced to leave the eastern coastal city, while over 90,000 residents fled from areas surrounding Madrid and Ávila. Tragically, a man lost his life in a wildfire in Manises, a suburb of Valencia, marking Spain’s first fatality in the recent fires.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to convene a crisis meeting in response to the escalating wildfires. The meeting, scheduled for 10 am Paris time, will be held at the Ministry of the Interior and will include the participation of ministers overseeing the economy and trade.
The primary fire in southwestern France is currently approximately nine miles away from the southern outskirts of Bordeaux, a significant metropolitan area in France.
Despite the proximity of the wildfires, Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave has stated that there are currently no plans to evacuate the city’s population of around 850,000 individuals.
The regional prefecture reported that an estimated 42,000 hectares of land have been consumed by the fires in Gironde, primarily affecting forests and dry vegetation exacerbated by consecutive heatwaves. The affected area is four times the size of Paris.
President Macron expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for showing solidarity with the wildfire victims in France and Spain. The Pope, during his Sunday Angelus prayer, mentioned the devastating fires and called for prayers for the affected individuals and the emergency responders combating the blazes.
