A woman who was at the center of a scandal involving a fake baby has spoken out about the controversy for the first time. Kira Cousins, a 23-year-old former supermarket employee, gained worldwide attention last October for deceiving her then-boyfriend and family into believing she was pregnant, only to later reveal a plastic doll as her newborn.

In her initial interview, Kira explained her reasons for pretending to give birth to a daughter named Bonnie-Leigh Joyce, while her ex-boyfriend Jamie Gardner expressed genuine belief that the doll was real. Kira, from Airdrie, Scotland, admitted that her actions were wrong but cited an inability to inform Jamie about her miscarriage as the reason for the deception.

She disclosed to the Sunday Mail that she struggled to communicate the loss of the child to Jamie due to emotional distress. Jamie, who thought he had become a father, expressed shock upon discovering the truth about Bonnie-Leigh Joyce and stated that he would have ended the relationship earlier had he known the reality.

Kira’s elaborate hoax included wearing a fake baby bump for months, sharing ultrasound images, and hosting a gender reveal party. She posted about baby-related activities and even fabricated footage of the “baby” in her womb. Kira admitted to maintaining the facade out of fear and shock, as well as unresolved relationship issues with Jamie.

The deception continued for several months, during which Jamie cared for the supposed newborn, unaware of the truth. Kira eventually had to confess to Jamie that the baby was a doll after suspicions arose among their relatives and the truth was on the verge of being exposed.

Despite conflicting accounts of how the truth came to light, Kira maintains that only she and Jamie were aware of the deception. She questioned the awareness of her family and friends regarding the doll, emphasizing that if they were unaware, they were naive.

Kira also mentioned a strained relationship with Jamie post-scandal, with unclear feelings between them. She highlighted that Jamie had limited exposure to the doll, contrary to public perception. She opted out of a planned documentary, citing concerns about the editing process, while Jamie expressed a desire to move on from the incident and distance himself from Kira.
