A recent survey has shown that almost half of graduates who borrowed student loans regret their decision. According to research conducted by Obsurvant, only half of the respondents felt adequately informed when they opted for higher education, with just 54% believing that their university experience had equipped them for significant financial choices.
The study revealed that confidence in handling numbers played a crucial role in how well-informed students felt. A substantial 72% of individuals who were “strongly confident” in mathematics reported feeling knowledgeable about the long-term expenses associated with their loans, in contrast to only 21% of those lacking confidence in math.
Currently, universities can charge up to £9,535 annually for standard full-time courses, with the government announcing a planned increase in tuition fees to align with inflation over the next two years, potentially reaching around £10,000.
Criticism has been directed towards the government regarding student loans, with the National Union of Students (NUS) likening the situation to being deceived by a “loan shark.” Lord Agnew, the former Treasury minister and Chair of the Numeracy for Life Committee, highlighted that a significant portion of borrowers regretted their loan decisions, emphasizing that a lack of numeracy skills contributed to this issue.
The concern over the selling of student loans in England has been ongoing, with Martin Lewis, the founder of MoneySavingExpert, labeling Plan 2 student loans as a “breach of contract.” Graduates who took out student loans between September 2012 and July 2023 are required to repay 9% of their earnings above £29,385.
The threshold for repayment will be frozen from 2027 to 2030, deviating from the initial promise of annual uprating in line with earnings when Plan 2 loans were introduced in 2010. This development has sparked further debate on the transparency and fairness of student loan schemes.
