Two popular destinations in Spain are on high alert following cases of the potentially fatal West Nile virus affecting several individuals.
Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been identified in Fuengirola and Mijas, both popular destinations among British tourists. Health authorities have confirmed the presence of infected mosquitoes in traps set up in these areas.
The regional government of Andalucía has issued alerts in the towns of Bollullos de la Mitación and Fuengirola, as well as around Las Lagunas in Mijas.
These alerts will be in effect for at least four weeks or until a period passes without any new cases or evidence of the virus being detected.
Authorities are intensifying inspections on mosquitoes, animals, and humans while issuing warnings through pharmacies and healthcare providers. Health officials have briefed local councils in Coria, Bollullos de la Mitación, Fuengirola, Mijas, Seville, and Malaga.
The current count of confirmed cases stands at five individuals. The first case was reported in a man from Coria del Río, Seville, on July 17, with confirmation made after testing at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital.
A spokesperson from the health department stated, “This case, identified early, is a mild one thanks to the surveillance program in place for West Nile Fever vectors in Andalusia. As a precaution, the alert in this Sevillian municipality has been extended until August 14.”
With the addition of Bollullos de la Mitación, Fuengirola, and Las Lagunas, a total of 15 municipalities in Andalusia are now under alert. Other areas under surveillance include Pulpí, Torredonjimeno, Salobreña, Almensilla, Aznalcázar, Constantina, Gelves, La Puebla del Río, Mairena del Aljarafe, Palomares del Río, and Villamanrique de la Condesa.
Furthermore, there has been an increase in mosquito densities in various regions, prompting the Ministry to advise councils and citizens on protective measures, especially for vulnerable populations.
Medical experts emphasize the use of approved mosquito repellents, wearing light clothing covering most of the body, and avoiding strong scents, which attract mosquitoes.
