An 18-month-old girl tragically passed away after being inadvertently left inside a nursery transport vehicle for an extended period. The toddler, identified as Sofia, was picked up for nursery in Portugal and remained in the vehicle unnoticed by nursery staff until her mother arrived to collect her later that day. Sofia’s grandmother highlighted that the child’s daily drop-off and arrival times were typically recorded, but on this occasion, there was no record of her attendance.
Although Sofia attended a nursery in the Pragal area, she was found inside a vehicle parked outside a different site operated by the same institution on Avenida do Cristo Rei. Upon her mother’s arrival for pick-up, the staff were unaware of Sofia’s whereabouts, leading to a frantic search that culminated in breaking into the vehicle to rescue the child. Despite efforts by emergency responders, including firefighters and medical personnel, Sofia could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected case of accidental negligence, with the Portugal Judicial Police launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sofia’s untimely death. It was revealed that the vehicle involved belonged to an institution employee, although it displayed a school transport sticker. The president of the Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims emphasized that the tragedy appeared to be a result of negligence rather than intentional harm, urging a focus on the investigation to determine the lapses in proper procedures that led to the devastating outcome.
He underscored the need for accountability, stating that all parties involved, including school personnel, parents, and family members, bore the impact of the incident, with the child ultimately being the main victim due to her loss. The president emphasized the importance of addressing the negligence uncovered in the case and ensuring that proper measures are in place to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
