Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana has strategically orchestrated a transfer to Broadmoor Hospital, as per the Prison Officers’ Association. Rudakubana committed a horrific act, killing three children and injuring several others during an assault at a dance class in Southport in July 2024.
Recently, the Ministry of Justice confirmed Rudakubana’s relocation from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor, emphasizing that he will remain incarcerated with slim chances of release. Chris Walker, representing the bereaved families, expressed dismay at the timing of this move, viewing it as a manipulative tactic by Rudakubana to exploit the system.
Mark Fairhurst, Chairman of the Prison Officers’ Association, criticized the transfer, stating that Rudakubana, now 19, has taken advantage of the system to gain privileges at Broadmoor, where he will be treated as a patient. Fairhurst underscored the risks this poses to staff, emphasizing the need for Rudakubana to serve his entire sentence in solitary confinement.
Former prison officer Sally Jameson condemned the possibility of Rudakubana receiving benefits at Broadmoor and assured that he would not receive any time reduction on his sentence. The Department for Work and Pensions clarified that individuals moved from prison to a hospital setting are ineligible for benefits.
Rudakubana’s move to Broadmoor, approved by officials on behalf of ministers, does not alter his 52-year sentence. The Ministry of Justice reiterated that the decision to transfer him followed a clinical assessment under the Mental Health Act and strict security protocols. Rudakubana will stay in the high-security psychiatric unit until deemed fit to return to prison, where he will serve his complete sentence.
