Football enthusiasts are rallying to raise funds for a statue commemorating Kevin Keegan at the location where he launched his career, following his passing due to cancer. The proposed statue is intended for Scunthorpe, North Lincs, where the two-time Ballon D’Or recipient initially played more than 100 matches before transferring to Liverpool in 1971 for £33,000. David Beverley, vice chairman of The Iron Trust supporters group spearheading the initiative, expressed that the statue would be a fitting homage to “King Kev,” who evolved into a legendary figure in the sport.
Keegan, who passed away at 75 on Monday, had a distinguished playing career, representing clubs like Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle, and earning 63 England caps, including 31 as captain. He clinched numerous accolades with Liverpool, including three league Division One titles, the European Cup, two Uefa Cups, and the FA Cup. Subsequently, he achieved success at Hamburg with back-to-back Ballon d’Or awards in 1978 and 1979, being one of the few English players to win the accolade twice. Despite managerial roles at England, Newcastle, Fulham, and Manchester City, Keegan maintained his ties to Scunthorpe, actively supporting fundraising efforts.
During his last visit in December last year to witness a National League match at the club, Keegan’s presence was honored with a minute’s applause, floral tributes, and the establishment of a book of condolence at the Attis Arena. Visitors, like Steven Plumtree and Jamie Benson, paid their respects, emphasizing Keegan’s enduring connection to Scunthorpe and his down-to-earth nature that endeared him to many.
