After undergoing a €20 million refurbishment, Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau am Inn, Austria, has been repurposed as a police station to prevent it from becoming a site of neo-Nazi reverence. The property, where Hitler was born in 1889 before his family relocated, was previously a private residence until it was acquired by the Austrian government following a legal dispute.
To deter far-right groups, the building’s exterior has been altered, removing any Nazi-related features and adding a police sign above the entrance. The decision to convert the house into a police station was deemed the most effective way to “neutralize” its historical significance and dissuade extremist gatherings.
Despite objections from the former owner, Gerlinde Pommer, who contested the property seizure, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the government’s compulsory purchase. Plans to transform the site into a historical monument were dismissed due to concerns about attracting extremists, leading to the eventual establishment of a police station at the location.
While the move to repurpose the building has been met with criticism from some who advocate for a more commemorative approach to honor Nazi regime victims, the Austrian government asserts that a permanent police presence will send a clear message of intolerance towards Nazi sympathizers. Amid differing opinions on the building’s future use, suggestions have been made to create a space promoting pacifism instead.
