Andy Burnham is set to reveal the reinstatement of the £2 bus fare cap, a move that will reduce daily travel expenses for numerous passengers. Starting in January, bus riders outside London will benefit from a maximum single fare of £2, aligning with the government’s initiative to provide relief on living costs to struggling citizens.

The absence of the fare cap could result in fares exceeding £10 on certain routes, prompting the Prime Minister to emphasize the importance of affordable transport for all individuals. The government aims to ensure that cheaper transportation options are accessible to everyone, with the commitment to enforce a £2 cap on bus fares nationwide.

Previously introduced by the Tories in 2023, the £2 cap on bus fares was extended until March 2027, covering approximately 5,000 bus routes across England. This measure, coupled with an additional £400 million in funding, is anticipated to significantly benefit commuters, particularly in rural and coastal areas where fare prices tend to be higher due to limited transport links.

John Healey, the newly appointed Chancellor, affirmed the government’s dedication to capping bus fares at £2 until 2027, reducing fares by a third for millions of passengers. The funding for this initiative will be sourced from savings generated elsewhere, ensuring no additional financial burden on taxpayers.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the aim of making everyday journeys more convenient and economical, stating that the fare reduction aims to alleviate living costs, enhance access to opportunities, and maintain vital connections for individuals across various aspects of their lives.

The government’s decision to eliminate VAT on electricity bills, in conjunction with the bus fare cap, aligns with Burnham’s vision of leading a cost-of-living government, striving to alleviate financial pressures on households. The move is expected to result in a £45 reduction in the average bill starting from October 1, offering much-needed relief to individuals facing economic challenges.
