Australia Post worker loses job after visiting KFC during work hours

An Australia Post employee in Newcastle, Australia, with over 30 years of service was dismissed for stopping at a KFC outlet during his lunch break in the delivery van. Despite claiming unfair treatment, the Fair Work Commission upheld the termination, citing multiple instances of misconduct, including the KFC incident.

The incident occurred on May 7, 2025, when the worker took an unauthorized hour-long break without informing his supervisor. Additionally, he left work early without permission on the same day and displayed rude behavior when questioned about his actions.

Australia Post revealed that the worker had expressed intentions of retiring soon and engaging in disruptive behavior, such as ignoring messages from management and taking numerous unexplained absences. The employee failed to provide satisfactory explanations for his actions, leading to his eventual termination.

Although the worker cited stress-related medical issues, the commission sided with Australia Post, emphasizing the employee’s consistent lack of cooperation and misconduct. Despite potential challenges in finding new employment due to his age and long tenure, the commission deemed the termination justified.

The Fair Work Commission highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation in maintaining an employment relationship, emphasizing the severity of the worker’s actions. Australia Post welcomed the commission’s decision, affirming the company’s adherence to workplace standards.
