Five individuals lost their lives while trying to rescue a struggling swimmer in a river, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities. The incident took place on Sunday, July 19, along the Scioto River in Powell, Ohio. The tragic event unfolded when one person entered the river for a swim, leading to others attempting to assist and getting into trouble themselves.
Multiple individuals entered the water to aid the struggling swimmer, with a motorist later calling emergency services after seeing a distressed child from the group seeking help nearby. Search efforts by rescue teams on Sunday resulted in the discovery of two deceased women at a hospital, while the bodies of three men were recovered from the river the following day.
According to reports from the U.S. Geological Survey, the river was flowing at a significantly high and fast rate on the day of the incident, far exceeding its average flow. This unfortunate event occurred shortly after a flash flood in southern Utah claimed the lives of five hikers.
Authorities placed the child who sought help and another child under 10 under the care of family services, and were in the process of notifying the victims’ relatives.
