As a retired school secretary and piano teacher, Jean is resolute in her mission to protect not just the oak tree but also the diverse wildlife that has thrived in its vicinity for generations.
Living in a three-bedroom bungalow in Allensmore, Hereford since 2003, Jean, a mother of two, emphasizes the importance of preserving the oak tree for the local ecosystem. She highlights the abundance of wildlife, including bats and owls, in the area, stating that the oak tree serves as a crucial habitat for various species. Jean expressed her concerns regarding the potential negative impact of the road project on the wildlife and the tranquility of the area.
The proposed Southern Link Road, spanning two miles, aims to redirect the A49 around Hereford to alleviate traffic congestion in the city center. Initially approved in 2015, Jean argues that the construction of a high-speed road near her property is no longer a viable solution given the changes in planning regulations since the project’s inception. She fears that the road’s construction would result in constant noise pollution and disrupt the peaceful environment she cherishes.
Jean also worries about the impact the development could have on the resale value of her £575,000 home, which she purchased 23 years ago for £175,000. Following the passing of her husband, Michael, with whom she shared the property, Jean remains resolute in her decision not to engage in negotiations with Herefordshire Council regarding the sale of her land for the road project.
Despite the council’s assertion that most affected landowners have either agreed or are close to reaching agreements on the land sale, Jean stands firm in her refusal to participate in discussions with the council. The authorities have indicated that compulsory purchase proceedings have been initiated where voluntary agreements could not be reached, underscoring the council’s commitment to securing the necessary land for the infrastructure project.
