A massive wildfire in a popular vacation destination has caused chaos, prompting the evacuation of 1,000 residents and scorching an area equivalent to the size of Manchester. The Zaragoza wildfire, which started in the northern Spanish community of Aragon, has ravaged nearly 16,000 hectares since Wednesday. Considered one of Spain’s most devastating forest fires this year, the blaze continues to rage uncontrollably, forcing evacuations and posing a significant threat.

New drone footage has captured the alarming sight of flames engulfing the historic Cinco Villas area from above. The video, filmed by Spain’s Guardia Civil, shows bright yellow flames casting a glow on massive columns of smoke rising from the ground at night. The fire’s orange borders extend for miles, advancing at a rate of approximately 60 meters per minute.

On the ground, approximately 400 emergency responders, supported by 19 aircraft, are tirelessly combating the inferno. Authorities anticipate that it may take several days to contain the fire fully as worsening weather conditions, including decreasing humidity and shifting winds, continue to fuel its spread towards the western regions. Residents in the affected areas, such as Malpica de Arba, Orés, Asín, Luesia, and Uncastillo, have been instructed to evacuate due to the fire’s proximity.

Emergency services remain on high alert, with Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, Aragón’s regional minister, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the fire’s unpredictable behavior and urged caution and minimal activity in forested areas. The wildfire is expected to be a prolonged battle, requiring extensive efforts to bring it under control and eventually extinguish it.

Ensuring the safety of residents in the fire’s path is the top priority for local authorities, who have evacuated vulnerable communities and provided support to those affected. Evacuees have been relocated to alternative accommodations, including a sports center in Ejea de los Caballeros, while additional assistance, including psychological support, is being extended to those displaced by the fire. Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has pledged government support and urged the public to exercise extreme caution during this crisis.
