Track icon Steve Cram commended Scottish runner Josh Kerr after he set a new world record for the mile in front of a thrilled crowd of 60,000 in London.
Olympic silver medalist Kerr, 28, now joins the ranks of British track legends like Sir Roger Bannister, Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe, and Cram himself. Cram, aged 65, emphasized that the mile world record is a feat that resonates worldwide.
Expressing his admiration, Cram stated, “I believe this achievement will be a standout moment when Josh reflects on his career in the future. He has earned a place among the esteemed company of Sir Roger Bannister, John Walker, John Landy, and Peter Snell.”
Kerr clocked a time of 3 minutes and 42.66 seconds, surpassing the record set 27 years ago by Moroccan athlete Hicham El Guerrouj.
Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, Kerr highlighted the intensity of his final lap and credited his relentless effort, which was acknowledged with a $50,000 prize presented by Lord Coe.
Kerr’s rigorous training routine included specific strategies such as timed ice baths, altitude chamber sessions, dietary practices like consuming spinach regularly, and using sodium bicarbonate to combat muscle fatigue.
Having started his running journey at Edinburgh Athletic Club at the age of eight, Kerr’s dedication led him to the University of New Mexico in the U.S. at 17 to pursue his athletic aspirations. His upcoming event is the prestigious “Commonwealth Mile” at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Athletics and Para Athletics competitions will span six days at Scotstoun Stadium from July 27 to August 1, 2026, featuring a total of 43 medal events in Athletics and 16 in Para Athletics.
